Gamescenes: Art in the Age of Videogames

Date: 2006
Description:
Contemporary artists like to deal with the materials and means that society creates and make everyday tools, like video games, become. How can you make art with video games? Miltos Manetas makes the hardware and the players subject to his canvases; Todd Deutsch photographs players during grueling tournaments; Tobias Bernstrup creates musical performances and invents fantastic worlds; Eddo Stern builds fortresses and animated ships with videos; Jon Haddock graphically reproduces news events; Alison Mealey and Delire reprogram the game, turning it into an "automatic painting tool". The volume collects the works of 32 international artists, with over 320 color images, proposing an analysis of the videogame universe and its various expressive forms, but also a voice to free the video game from the reputation of a "diabolical instrument" of cerebral darkening and give it dignity of cultural expression. Aimed at an international audience, it offers the Italian public the complete translation of critical texts.
