Une Esthétique Urbaine: Graffeurs d'Europe

Date: 2012
Description:
This book is a step in a research work undertaken since the end of the 90s. Based on an ethnological approach, the research allowed the constitution of a collection for the Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, thanks to the support of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux. The meetings with about sixty European graffiti artists, interviewed and filmed as well as the participation in many events are at the heart of this work. These pages open a few windows on the history of Graffiti in Europe and on some of the most striking figures of what was in its beginnings a fun, a foothold, an underground way of life. Over the years, he has experienced a number of transformations, escaping part of its bases, while living through his enthusiasts. This cultural movement, whose actors share a way of life, was built in and by the street, and claims to be as such. Alongside other minority movements that take a particular look at the urban environment, it helps transform the street into a place of life and make it a place of aestheticization. Work abundantly illustrated with images of surveys, objects and works of art from the collections of MuCEM and private collections, over its pages, the eyes of graffiti artists and that of society are put into perspective.
